Tariff
TariffCustoms, duties, toll. or tribute payable upon merchandise to the general government is called tariff; the rate of customs, also bears this name and the list of articles liable to duties is also called the tariff. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Customs This term is usually applied to those taxes which are payable upon goods and merchandise imported or exported. Duties In its most enlarged sense, this word is nearly equivalent to taxes, embracing all impositions or charges levied on persons or things; in its more restrained sense, it is often used as equivalent to customs or imposts. Toll 1) Contracts. A sum of money for the use of something, generally applied to the consideration which is paid for the use of a road, bridge, or the like, of a public nature. Toll is also the compensation paid to a miller for grinding another person's grain. 2) To toll. Estates, rights. To bar, defeat, or take away; as to toll an entry into lands, is to deny. or take away the right of entry. Tribute A contribution which is sometimes raised by the sovereign from his subject, to sustain the expenses of the state. It is also a sum of money paid by one nation to another under some pretended right. Merchandise By this term is understood all those things which merchants sell either wholesale or retail, as dry goods, hardware, groceries, drugs, &c. It is usually applied to personal chattels only, and to those which are not required for food or immediate support, but such as remain after having been used or which are used only by a slow consumption. General 1) A principal officer, particularly in the army. 2) Something opposed to special; as, a general verdict, the general issue, which expressions are used in contradistinction to special verdict, special issue. 3) Principal, as the general post office. 4) Not select, as a general ship. 5) Not particular, as a general custom. 5) Not limited, as general jurisdiction. 7) This word is sometimes annexed or prefixed to other words to express or limit the extent of their signification; as Attorney General, Solicitor General, the General Assembly. Government "natural and political law. The manner in which sovereignty is exercised in each state. There are three simple forms of government, the democratic, the aristocratic, and monarchical. But these three simple forms may be varied to infinity by the mixture and divisions of their different powers. Sometimes by the word government is understood the body of men, or the individual in the state, to whom is entrusted the executive power. It is taken in this sense when the government is spoken of in opposition to other bodies in the state. Tangible personal property memorandum (TPPM) A legal document that is referred to in a will and used to guide the distribution of tangible personal property. Tangible property That which may be felt or touched; it must necessarily be corporeal, but it may be real or personal. A house and a horse are, each, tangible property. The terni is used in contradistinction to property not tangible. By the latter expression, is; meant that kind of property which, though in possession as respects the right, and, consequently, not strictly choses in action, yet differ; from goods, because they are neither tangible nor visible, though the thing produced from the right be perfectly so. In this class may be mentioned copyrights and patent-rights. Tarde venit Practice. The name of a return made by the sheriff to a writ, when it came into his hands too late to be executed before the return day. Tare weights. An allowance in the purchase and sale of merchandise, for the weight of the box, bag, or cask, or other thing, in which the goods are packed. It is also an allowance made for tiny defect, waste, or diminution in the weight, quality or quantity of goods. Tariff Tavern A place of entertainment; a house kept up for the accommodation of strangers. Tax court of the united states A judicial body which hears cases concerning federal tax laws. Tax intercept The process by which a child support judgment debtor's federal and state income tax refunds are diverted to pay a support arrearage. Taxable income The income against which tax rates are applied to compute tax paid; gross income of businesses or adjusted gross income of individuals less deductions and exemptions.
