Selectmen

The name of certain officers in several of the United States, who are invested by the statutes of the several states with various powers.

Several
A state of separation or partition. A several agreement or cove-nant, is one entered into by two or more persons separately, each binding himself for the whole; a several action is one in which two or more persons are separately charged; a several inheritance, is one conveyed so as to descend, or come to two persons separately by moieties. Several is usually opposed to joint.

Seizure
Practice. The act of taking possession of the property of a person condemned by the judgment of a competent tribunal, to pay a certain sum of money, by a sheriff, constable, or other officer, lawfully authorized thereto, by virtue of an execution, for the purpose of having such property sold according to law to satisfy the judgment. By seizure is also meant the taking possession of goods for a violation of a public law; as the taking possession of a ship for attempting an illicit trade.

Self-approval
The act of authorizing a transaction for one's own benefits or gains, or an act of approval for an activity in which the approval authority participated.

Self-certify
An employer is obliged to pay Statutory Sick Pay for the first 28 days of absence if the employee has been incapacitated for four or more working days. Employees self-certify for the first seven days of absence but thereafter a Continuation Form should be sought from the employee's General Practitioner. Statutory Sick Pay can generally be recovered by an employer through deductions from National Insurance Contributions.

Criminal law. The right to protect one's person and property from injury.

Self-defense
The claim that an act otherwise criminal was legally justifiable because it was necessary to protect a person or property from the threat or action of another.

Self-incrimination, Privilege against
The constitutional right of people to refuse to give testimony against themselves that could subject them to criminal prosecution. The right is guaranteed in the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution . Asserting the right is often referred to as "taking the Fifth."
