Province




Province

1) Sometimes this signifies the district into which a country has been divided; as, the province of Canterbury, in England the province of Languedoc, in France. 2) Sometimes it means a dependency or colony; as, the province of New Brunswick. 3) It is sometimes used figuratively, to signify power or authority; as, it is the province of the court to judge of the law, that of the jury to decide on the facts.

Dependency

An elected or appointed public official with authority to hear and decide cases in a court of law.

Law
A rule or body of rules of conduct inherent in human nature and essential to or binding upon human society. The learned profession that is mastered by graduate study in a law school and that is responsible for the judicial system.

Jury
A body of persons sworn to inquire into crime and, if appropriate, bring accusations (indictments) against the suspected criminals.

Provision
1) Common law. The property which a drawer of a bill of exchange places in the hands of a drawee; as, for example, by remittances, or when the drawee is indebted to the drawer when the bill becomes due, provision is said to have been made.
