Preliminary hearing

Also, preliminary examination. A hearing by a judge to determine whether a person charged with a crime should be held for trial.

Preliminary
Something which precedes, as preliminaries of peace, which are the first sketch of a treaty, and contain the principal articles on which both parties are desirous of concluding, and which are to serve as the basis of the treaty.

Hearing
"1) Chwncery practice. The term, hearing is given to the trial of a chancery suit. 2) Criminal law. The examination of a prisoner charged with a crime or misdemeanor, and of the witnesses for the accuser.

1) That which is put before.
