Pilot




Pilot

Merchant law. 1) An officer serving on board of a ship during the course of a voyage, and having the charge of the helm and of the ship's route; 2) An officer authorized by law, who is taken on board at a particular place, for the purpose of conducting a ship through a river, road or channel, or from or into port.

Merchant
One whose business it is to buy and sell merchandise; this applies to all persons who habitually trade in merchandise.

A rule or body of rules of conduct inherent in human nature and essential to or binding upon human society. The learned profession that is mastered by graduate study in a law school and that is responsible for the judicial system.

Board
This word is used to designate all the magistrates of a city or borough, or all the managers or directors of any institution; as, the board of aldermen; the board of directors of the Bank of North America. The majority of the board have in general the power to perform the acts of the whole board, but sometimes they are restrained by their charters, and it requires a greater number to perform certain acts.

Ship
This word, in its most enlarged sense, signifies a vessel employed in navigation; for example, the terms the ship's papers, the ship's hushand, shipwreck, and the like, are employed whether the vessel referred to be a brig, a sloop, or a three-masted vessel.

The direction in which a line runs in surveying.

Charge
1) Wills, devises. An obligation which a testator imposes on his devisee. 2) Contracts. An obligation entered into by the owner of an estate which makes the estate responsible for its performance. 3) Practice. The opinion expressed by the court to the jury, on the law arising out of a case before them.

Place
Pleading, evidence. A particular portion of space; locality.

River
A natural collection of waters, arising from springs or fountains, which flow in a bed or canal of considerable width and length, towards the sea.

Road
1) A passage through the country for the use of the people. 2) Maritime law. A road is defined by Lord Hale to be an open passage of the sea, which, from the situation of the adjacent land, and its own depth and wideness, affords a secure place for the common riding and anchoring of vessels.

Civil law. The name given to one of the legis actiones of the Roman law. It consisted chiefly in the taking. of a pledge, and was in fact a mode of execution. It was confined to special cases determined by positive law or by custom, such as taxes, duties, rents and is comparable in some respects to distresses at common law. A liquid measure containing half a quart or the eighth part of a gallon.

Pipe
English laid. The name of a roll in the exchequer otherwise called the Great Roll. A measure containing two hogsheads; one hundred and twenty-six gallons is also called a pipe.
