Michigan

One of the new, states of the United States of America. This state was admitted into the Union by the Act, of Congress of January 26th, 1837, which enacts "that the state of Michigan shall be one and is hereby declared to be one, of the United States of Amaerica, and admitted into the Union on an equal footing with the original states, in all respects whatever."

By this name are understood in some countries, the assembly of the different orders of the people to regulate the affairs of the commonwealth, as, the states general.

State
1) Government. In its most enlarged sense, it signifies a self-sufficient body of persons united together in one community for the defence of their rights, and to do right and justice to foreigners. In this sense, the state means the whole people united into one body politic; and the state, and the people of the state, are equivalent expressions. 2) Condition of persons. This word has various acceptations. If we inquire into its origin, it will be found to come from the Latin status, which is derived from the verb stare, sto, whence has been made statio, which signifies the place where a person is located, stat, to fulfil the obligations which are imposed upon him.

Union
By this word is understood the United States of America; as, all good citizens will support the Union.

Act
1) Civil law, contracts. A writing which states in a legal form that a thing has been said, done, or agreed. 2) Evidence. The act of one of several conspirators, performed inpursuance of the common design, is evidence against all of them.

Congress
Med. juris. This name was anciently given in France, England, and other countries, to the-indecent intercourse between married persons, in the presence of witnesses appointed by the courts, in cases when the husband or wife was charged by the other with impotence.

Contracts. A person who is employed both by the seller and purchaser of goods, or by the purcbaser alone, to receive them into his possession, for the purpose of doing something in or about them; as, if goods be delivered from a ship by the seller, to a wharfinger, to be by him forwarded to the purchaser, who has been appointed by the latter to receive them; or if goods be sent to a packer, for and by orders of the vendee, the packer is to be considerpd as a middleman.

Midwife
Medical jurisprudence. A woman who practices midwifery; a woman who pursues the business of an account.

A person who leaves his/her country of origin to seek residence in another country.

Mile
Measure. A length of a thousand paces, or seventeen hundred and sixty yards, or five thousand two hundred and eighty feet. It contains eight furlongs, every furlong being forty poles, and each pole sixteen feet six inches.

Mileage
A compensation allowed by law to officers, for their trouble and expenses in travelling on public business.
