Memorandum

Memorandum1) Literally, to be remembered. It is an informal instrument recording some fact or agreement, so called from its beginning, when it was made in Latin. It is sometimes commenced with this word, though written in English; as "Memorandum, that it is agreed," or it is headed with the words, "Be it remembered that,". The term memorandum is also applied to the clause of an instrument. 2) Insurance. A clause in a policy limiting the liability of the insurer. Its usual form is as follows, namely,fish, salt, fruit, flour and seed, are warranted free from average, unless general, or the ship be stranded: sugar, tobacco, hemp, flax, hides and skins, are warranted free from average, under five percent; and all other goods, also the ship and freight, are warranted free from average, under three percent unless general, or the ship be stranded."

"1) Not bound to servitude; at liberty to act as one pleases. This word is put in opposition to slave. 2) Ships. By this is understood neutral vessels. Free ships are sometimes considered as making free goods.
General
1) A principal officer, particularly in the army. 2) Something opposed to special; as, a general verdict, the general issue, which expressions are used in contradistinction to special verdict, special issue. 3) Principal, as the general post office. 4) Not select, as a general ship. 5) Not particular, as a general custom. 5) Not limited, as general jurisdiction. 7) This word is sometimes annexed or prefixed to other words to express or limit the extent of their signification; as Attorney General, Solicitor General, the General Assembly.

This word, in its most enlarged sense, signifies a vessel employed in navigation; for example, the terms the ship's papers, the ship's hushand, shipwreck, and the like, are employed whether the vessel referred to be a brig, a sloop, or a three-masted vessel.
Freight
Maritim law, contracts. The sum agreed on for the hire of a ship, entirely or in part, for the carriage of goods from one port to another; note; but in, its more extensive sense it is applied to all rewards or compensation paid for the use of ships.
