Iou

Greek hypothesis, a placing under; supposition. "I owe you". A popular designation of a due-bill or memorandum of debt. Consist's of those letters, a sum of money, and the debtor's signature. As it contains no direct promise to pay, it is not a promissory note, but a mere acknowledgment of indebtedness.

Wills. The expression used by a testator, instead of the name of the person or the thing he is desirous to name.

An acknowledgment of a debt, in writing, is so called.

Memorandum
1) Literally, to be remembered. It is an informal instrument recording some fact or agreement, so called from its beginning, when it was made in Latin. It is sometimes commenced with this word, though written in English; as "Memorandum, that it is agreed," or it is headed with the words, "Be it remembered that,". The term memorandum is also applied to the clause of an instrument. 2) Insurance. A clause in a policy limiting the liability of the insurer. Its usual form is as follows, namely,fish, salt, fruit, flour and seed, are warranted free from average, unless general, or the ship be stranded: sugar, tobacco, hemp, flax, hides and skins, are warranted free from average, under five percent; and all other goods, also the ship and freight, are warranted free from average, under three percent unless general, or the ship be stranded."

Debt
Whatever one owes. A sum of money due by certain and express agreement.

Money
Gold, silver, and some other less precious metals, in the progress of civilization and commerce, have become the common standards of value; in order to avoid the delay and inconvenience of regulating their weight and quality whenever passed, the governments of the civilized world have caused them to be manufactured in certain portions, and marked with a Stamp which attests their value; this is called money.

Signature
1) Ecclesiastical law. The name of a sort of rescript, without seal, containing the supplication, the signature of the pope or his delegate, and the grant of a pardon 2) pract. contr. By signature is understood the act of putting down a man's name, at the end of an instrument, to attest its validity. The name thus written is also called a signature.

Direct
Straight forward; not collateral.

Promise
Contracts. An engagement by which the promisor contracts towards another to perform or do something to the advantage of the latter.

Note
Estates, convention, practice. The fourth part of a fine of lands: it is an abstract of the writ of covenant and concord, and is only a, doequet taken by the chirographer, from which he draws up the indenture. It is sometimes taken in the old books for the concord.

Mere
This is the French word for mother. It is frequently used as, in ventre sa mere, which signifies; a child unborn, or in the womb.

Acknowledgment
A formal declaration before an authorized official by the person who executed an instrument that it is his free act and deed; the certificate of the official on such instrument attesting that it was so acknowledged.

Indebtedness
The state, of being in debt, without regard to the ability or inability of the party to pay the same.
