Gladius






Gladius

In our old Latin authors, and in the Norman laws, this word was used to signify supreme jurisdiction, jus gladii.

Word
Construction. One or more syllables which when united convey an idea a single part of speech.

That which is superior to all other things; as the supreme power of the state, which is an authority over all others. The supreme court, which is superior to all other courts.

Practice. A power constitutionally conferred upon a judge or magistrate, to take cognizance of, and decide causes according to law, and to carry his sentence into execution. The tract of land or district within which a judge or magistrate has jurisdiction, is called his territory, and his power in relation to his territory is called his territorial jurisdiction.
