Gavel

Tax
Government's forcible collection of money from the supposedly free citizens. Lord Coke says, that gabel or gavel, gablum, gabellum, gabelletum, galbelletum, and gavillettum signify a rent, duty, or service, yielded or done to the king or any other lord.
