Final decree
Final decreeA decree which finally decides and disposes of the merits of the whole cause, and reserves no further question or direction for the future judgment of the court, so that it will not be necessary to bring the cause again before the court for decision. In some countries as in France, some acts of the legislature, or of the sovereign, which have the force of law, are called decrees. 2) Practice. The judgment or sentence of a court of equity. Merits This word is used principally in matters of defence. Cause 1) Civil law. It signifies the delivery of the thing, or the accomplishment of the act which is the object of a convention. 2) It is the consideration or motive for making a contract. 3) Pleading. The reason; the motive. 4) Practice. A contested question before a court of justice; it is a Suit or action. Question 1) Punishment, crm. law. A means sometimes employed, in some countries, by means of torture, to compel supposed great criminals to disclose their accomplices, or to acknowledge their crimes. 2) Evidence. An interrogation put to a witness, requesting him to declare the truth of certain facts as far as he knows them. 3) Practice. A point on which the parties are not agreed, and which is submitted to the decision of a judge and jury. Direction 1) The order and government of an institution; the persons who compose the board of directors are jointly called the direction. 2) Practice. That part of a bill in chancery which contains the address of the bill to the court. Judgment Practice. The decision or sentence of the law, given by a court of justice or other competent tribunal, as the result of proceedings instituted therein, for the redress of an injury. Court A body in government to which the administration of justice is delegated. Will A will is a legal document in which a person directs how his property is to be distributed after his death. Such documents must be executed in due form and must be duly witnessed. Decision Practice. A judgment given by a competent tribunal.
