Desertion"1) Criminal law. An offence which consists in the abandonment of the public service, in the army or navy, without leave. 2) Torts. The act by which a man abandons his wife and children, or either of them. In the French law, the act by which a debtor surrenders his property for the benefit of his creditors. 3) Malicious. The act of a hushand or wife, who leaves his or her consort wilfully, and with an intention of causing perpetual separation. Public By the term the public, is meant the whole body politic, or all the citizens of the state; sometimes it signifies the inhabitants of a particular place; as, the New York public.
