Board of civil authority

Board of civil authorityA used in Vermont. This board is composed of the selectmen and justices of the peace of their respective towns. They are authorized to abate taxes, and the like.

To quash, beat down, destroy. That of abating a writ or action - its overthrow or defeat by some fatal exception to it.
