Ban
BanA proclamation, or public notice any summons or edict by which a thing is forbidden or commanded. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Proclamation 1) Evidence. The act of causing some state matters to be published or made generally known. A written or printed document in which are contained such matters, issued by proper authority; as the president's proclamation, the governor's, the mayor's proclamation. 2) The word proclamation is also used to express the public nomination made of any one to a high office; as, such a prince was proclaimed emperor. 3) Practice. The declaration made by the cryer, by authority of the court, that something is about to be done. Public By the term the public, is meant the whole body politic, or all the citizens of the state; sometimes it signifies the inhabitants of a particular place; as, the New York public. Notice The information given of some act done, or the interpellation by which some act is required to be done. It also signifies, simply, knowledge; as A had notice that B was a slave. Summons Practice. The name of a writ commanding the sheriff, or other authorized officer, to notify a party to appear in court to answer a complaint made against him and in the said writ specified, on a day therein mentioned. Edict A law ordained by the sovereign, by which he forbids or commands something it extends either to the whole country, or only to some particular provinces. A punishment inflicted upon criminals, by compelling them to quit a city, place, or country, for, a specified period of time, or for life.
