Archbishop

Ecclesiastical law The chief of the clergy of a whole province. He has the, inspection of the bishops of that province, as well as of the inferior clergy, and may deprive them on notorious cause. The archbishop has also his own diocese, in which he exercises, episcopal jurisdiction, as in his province he exercises archiepiscopal authority.

Principal. One who is put above the rest.

Clergy
All who are attached to the ecclesiastical ministry are called the clergy; a clergyman is therefore an ecclesiastical minister.

Province
1) Sometimes this signifies the district into which a country has been divided; as, the province of Canterbury, in England the province of Languedoc, in France. 2) Sometimes it means a dependency or colony; as, the province of New Brunswick. 3) It is sometimes used figuratively, to signify power or authority; as, it is the province of the court to judge of the law, that of the jury to decide on the facts.

Inspection
1) Common law. The examination of certain articles made by law subject to such examination, so that they may be declared fit for commerce. The decision of the inspectors is not final; the object' of the law is to protect the community from fraud, and to preserve the character of the merchandise abroad. 2) Practice. Examination.

A hole dug in the earth in order to obtain water.

Inferior
One who in relation to another has less power and is below him; one who is bound to obey another. He who makes the law is the superior; he who is bound to obey it, the inferior.

Deprive
Referring to property taken under the power of eminent domain, means the same as "take". While the Fourteenth Amendment ordains that no state shall "deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law", no definition of the word "deprive" is found in the Constitution.

Cause
1) Civil law. It signifies the delivery of the thing, or the accomplishment of the act which is the object of a convention. 2) It is the consideration or motive for making a contract. 3) Pleading. The reason; the motive. 4) Practice. A contested question before a court of justice; it is a Suit or action.

The tract of land or district within which a judge or magistrate has jurisdiction, is called his territory, and his power in relation to his territory is called his territorial jurisdiction.

Authority
Government. The right and power which an officer has in the exercise of a public function to compel obedience to his lawful commands.

Arbitration exception
