Absolute
Without any condition or encumbrance, as an "absolute bond,"simplex obligatio, in distinction from a conditional bond;

Feudal
A term applied to whatever concerned a feud; as feudal law: feudal rights.

Obligation
In its general and most extensive sense, obligation is synony- mous with duty. In a more technical meaning, it is a tie which binds us to pay or to do something agreeably to the laws and customs of the country in which the obligation is made.

Allodial

Allonge
A piece of paper which has been attached to a contract, a check or any promissory note, on which to add signatures because there is not enough room on the main document.

Alternate director
Under the Articles of Association of a company a director can appoint another person to hold office and act in his place as a director on a temporary basis. An alternate director can vote at board meetings and carry out the same functions as his appointing director in his absence. The alternate carries full legal responsibility and liability as a director. Sometimes alternates may only be appointed from other members of the board to avoid the introduction of outsiders.

Alternative dispute resolution
Also known as "ADR"; methods by which legal conflicts and disputes are resolved privately and other than through litigation in the public courts, usually through one of two forms: mediation or arbitration. It typically involves a process much less formal than the traditional court process and includes the appointment of a third-party to preside over a hearing between the parties. The advantages of ADR are speed and money: it costs less and is quicker than court litigation. ADR forums are also private. The disadvantage is that it often involves compromise.

Alternative legacy
One where the testator gives one of two things to the legatee without designating which of them; as, one of my two horses.
